In-Yeo Couperus ist 32 Jahre alt und Modedesignerin aus Amsterdam. Vor 1,5 Jahren gründete sie ihr Label REPOSE AMS und designte zunächst wunderschöne, kuschelige Wolldecken für unsere Kleinen. Dieses Jahr brachte sie ihre erste Kinderkollektion für Kinder von zwei bis sechs Jahren auf den Markt. Wenn man ihr auf Instagram folgt, weiss man, dass ihre Kollektionen bereits um die Welt gehen – Fotos von Eltern aus Japan, England, Frankreich und natürlich Deutschland und viele mehr, die ihre Kinder in und mit REPOSE AMS Produkten zeigen.
Liebe In-Yeo, die erste Frage, die sich mir stellte war Folgende: Bist Du Mama und weil Dich Deine Kinder so sehr inspirieren hast Du Dein eigenes Label gegründet?
Diese Frage bekomme ich oft gestellt und nein, ich habe keine Kinder. Ich habe begonnen, Decken zu designen, weil ich kein passendes Geschenk für eine Freundin finden konnte, die zu dem Zeitpunkt Mutter geworden ist. Ich wollte ihr etwas persönliches schenken und etwas, das lange hält! Ich liebe Strickwaren und die meisten Decken, die ich gefunden habe bestanden aus Baumwolle und waren meistens rosa oder babyblau. Das war nicht das, was ich suchte, also beschloss ich, etwas eigenes zu designen.
Ich habe über 10 Jahre als Designerin gearbeitet und nun ein Kidslabel zu gründen, erschloss sich für mich als ein logischer, nächster Schritt.
Was bedeutet REPOSE AMS? Der Name hat einen schönen Klang. (repose=ruhen)
Repose hat mehrere Bedeutungen – ein friedvoller Geist, Ruhe, Gelassenheit, weg von Sorgen, hin zur Freiheit.
Das AMS stammt aus dem Wort Amsterdam. Ich finde, dass diese Buchstabenzusammensetzung unheimlich gut passt.
Dein Label ist zeitlos – war/ist das Dein Konzept? Zeitloser Strick und Kleidung? Worauf legst Du bei Deinen Designs den Fokus?
Als ich mit den Designs begann, hatte ich nicht wirklich ein Konzept, sondern folgte meinem Instinkt und kreierte das, was mir gefällt.
Ich persönlich gebe sehr gern viel Geld für ein Stück aus und lasse meine eigene Garderobe langsam wachsen. Mir ist es lieber, ein Teil zu kaufen, das jahrelang halten wird, als eine Tüte voller Sachen zu kaufen, die ich nach einigen Monaten schon wieder wegwerfen muss. Für mich steht Qualität höher als Quantität.
Und genau das ist es, was ich auch mit meiner Kollektion erreichen möchte: Beständige Kleidung, von der man lange etwas hat, in hoher Qualität, die einfach und elegant ist. Also ja, man kann schon sagen, die Designs sind zeitlos. :)
Dieses Jahr hast Du Deine erste Kollektion für Kinder auf den Markt gebracht. Sind weitere Kollektionen für Kinder geplant?
Ja, sind sie! Ich habe ursprünglich nicht weiter darüber nachgedacht, wie oft ich neu entwerfe. Ich habe einfach angefangen und wollte es laufen lassen.
Es wird eine Winterkollektion AW 16/17 geben, die im Juli gelaunched wird, gleichzeitig präsentiere ich in demselben Monat die Sommerkollektion SS17 auf der KID Show in Paris.
Ich habe gelesen, dass Dein Herz für Amsterdam schlägt, obwohl Du bereits in anderen, schönen Städten wie Antwerpen und Stockholm gelebt hast. Was sind Deine Lieblingsplätze in Amsterdam und was macht Amsterdam so besonders für Dich?
Ich kann das gar nicht in einen Grund verpacken, warum Amsterdam so besonders für mich ist. Ich habe schon in einigen anderen Städten gelebt und bin viel gereist, aber ich war immer wieder unheimlich glücklich darüber, zurück nach Amsterdam zu kommen.
Ich erinnere mich, als ich in Stockholm lebte, dass mir die holländische „gezelligheid“-Gemütlichkeit fehlte. Ich kann das schwer beschreiben, aber immer, wenn ich nach Amsterdam zurück komme freue ich mich jedes Mal darüber, wenn ich den „Dutch pub“ (Lokal) am Flughafen Schiphol sehe.
Es ist die niederländische Unkompliziertheit und Gemütlichkeit, die ich bewundere und liebe.
Ich bin visueller Mensch – ich mag es ästhetisch und mir gefallen alle hübschen Dinge und nahezu alles, was ich in Amsterdam sehe, ist wunderschön. Die vielen Parks, die alten, schiefen Häuser, das Gefühl, wenn ich mit dem Fahrrad fahre und die Sonne scheint – kurzum: Wenn ich in Amsterdam bin, bin ich der glücklichste Mensch auf der Welt.
Vielleicht ist es eine gewisse „Dutch“-Magie :).

In-Yeo Couperus is 32 years old, Amsterdam based and fashion designer. 1,5 years ago she founded her own label REPOSE AMS and started to design beautiful knitted blankets for our littles. This year she launched her first kids collection for kids aged 2-6. If you know her Instagram feed you may know that her products go around the whole world. Parents from Japan, England, France and of course Germany and many more show their kids in REPOSE AMS.
First of all, are you a mother? And is it because of your inspirational kids you started to design kid’s items?
I get asked that question a lot, and no I’m not a mother :)
I firstly started off designing blankets because I couldn’t find what I wanted when I was looking for something to give a dear friend when she became a mum, I really wanted to give her a personal gift and something that would last. I absolutely love knitwear and most of the blankets I could find were made of cotton and generally either pink or baby blue. I wanted something different that would stand out and last so I decided to design and create my own.
I have been working as a designer for 10 plus years now so the step to create a kids wear collection was a really logical step to me.
What’s the meaning of ‘REPOSE AMS’? It has a very lovely sound.
Repose has several definitions, of these what attracted me was – following freedom from worry, peace of mind, Calmness and tranquillity. To me these meanings capture my style and my philosophy perfectly!
The AMS comes from Amsterdam and the way the letter combination worked together also really appealed to me.
Repose is very timeless – is that your concept – timeless knits and clothes? What is your focus concerning your designs?
When I started I didn’t really have a concept as such, I initially followed my gut instinct and started creating what I found appealing. Personally I like to invest in pieces and grow my wardrobe slowly. I prefer to buy an item that will last for years instead of buying a bunch of clothes which I can throw out after a couple months, to me it’s quality over quantity.
That’s what I want to achieve with my collection as well, long lasting high quality items that stay simple and elegant, so yes, in that aspect you can say it’s timeless :).
This year you launched your first children’s collection – do you plan to do another collection for our little ones?
Yes, I do. I started out not really thinking long term I kind of just started… I intend to keep it all going now though and continue to design new collections!
On that note, in July I will be launching the second collection for AW 16/17 also in July I will be presenting the SS17 collection at the KID show in Paris.
I read that Amsterdam is where your heart is and that you have also lived in Antwerp and Stockholm which are very beautiful cities as well – which are your favourite places in Amsterdam and what makes this city so special for you?
I can’t really single out one reason why Amsterdam is so special to me, I have lived abroad and have travelled a lot but I am always so happy when I return to Amsterdam. I remember when I lived in Stockholm I missed the Dutch „gezelligheid“ sociability, I can’t really describe the feeling. Whenever I returned to Amsterdam I was always glad to see the Dutch pub at Schiphol Airport (it’s actually kind of horrible) because that brought the gezelligheid feeling back. The Dutch straightforward mentality is also something that I really like and admire.
I like aesthetics and all things pretty, I am a very visual person and almost everything in Amsterdam I find appealing and beautiful. The many parks, canals, old crooked houses the feeling when I am on my bike and the sun is shining – when I’m in Amsterdam I feel like the luckiest person in the world!
Maybe it’s a kind of Dutch magic :).
